Puppies change hands in minutes, but the responsibilities last a decade. The health guarantee, the registration, the spay or neuter rule — that handover works only because the promises are written into a dog breeding contract template.

This Dog Breeding Contract is entered into as of [1. Effective Date] by and between [2. Breeder Full Name] (the “Breeder”) and [3. Buyer Full Name] (the “Buyer”) for the puppy described below.

1. Puppy.

The Breeder sells to the Buyer the puppy described as [4. Puppy Description], breed [5. Breed], date of birth [6. Birth Date], sex [7. Sex], and microchip number [8. Microchip Number].

2. Purchase Price.

The Buyer agrees to pay the total price of [9. Purchase Price] for the puppy, with a non-refundable deposit of [10. Deposit Amount] paid upon execution of this contract and the balance due upon [11. Balance Due Date].

3. Health Guarantee.

The Breeder warrants that the puppy has received the vaccinations and veterinary care described in [12. Health Records] and is in good health as of the date of sale. The Buyer shall have the puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian within [13. Vet Exam Days] days of purchase. If the examination reveals a congenital or hereditary defect that materially affects the puppy’s health, the Buyer may return the puppy for a refund or replacement, subject to the terms of this guarantee.

4. Registration.

The puppy is registered with [14. Registry Name], and the Breeder shall provide the Buyer with the registration documents, transferred as follows: [15. Registration Transfer Terms]. If the puppy is sold with limited registration, the Buyer acknowledges the restrictions on breeding and showing that apply.

5. Spay or Neuter.

The Buyer agrees to have the puppy spayed or neutered by the age of [16. Spay Neuter Age] unless the Breeder has granted breeding rights in writing. Proof of the procedure shall be provided to the Breeder within [17. Proof Due Days] days of the procedure.

6. Return Clause.

If, at any time, the Buyer is unable to keep the puppy, the Buyer shall first offer to return the puppy to the Breeder before rehoming it to any third party. The Breeder shall have the first right to take the puppy back.

7. Buyer Obligations.

The Buyer agrees to provide proper care, including regular veterinary check-ups, appropriate food, shelter, and socialization, and to keep the puppy identified with the microchip registered to the Buyer’s current contact information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a dog breeding contract health guarantee cover?

Typically congenital or hereditary defects found by a vet within a set window — often 72 hours to 14 days. The guarantee should state whether the remedy is a refund, replacement, or covered vet costs.

What is the difference between limited and full AKC registration?

Limited registration means the dog cannot be bred or shown in AKC events. Full registration allows both. The contract should state which applies and any conditions for upgrading.

Should a puppy sale contract require spay or neuter?

Many breeders require it unless breeding rights are granted in writing. It prevents accidental litters and is a common condition of the sale.

Is the deposit refundable if the buyer changes their mind?

Usually not — most contracts state the deposit is non-refundable, though some return it if the puppy fails the vet exam or the breeder cannot deliver.
