Frequently Asked Questions

What license does a hair stylist need to rent a booth?

A current cosmetology license from the state's licensing board. The agreement should require proof and renewal, and services cannot be performed while the license is suspended.

Who is liable if a chemical service damages a client's hair?

The stylist, as the independent professional performing the service. The agreement should require professional liability insurance covering chemical services.

Who owns the clients after a stylist leaves?

Clients the stylist brought in belong to the stylist. The stylist cannot solicit other salon clients who were not theirs — the agreement should state this boundary.

Does a booth-renting stylist need their own insurance?

Yes — professional liability insurance, often with the salon named as an additional insured. This protects both parties if a client files a claim.
