Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the HIN on a boat?

The Hull Identification Number is usually stamped on the upper right corner of the transom. It is a 12-character code that identifies the boat uniquely, like a VIN on a car.

Do I need a bill of sale to register a boat?

Most states require a bill of sale, or proof of ownership, when you register a newly purchased vessel. Check your state's watercraft registration requirements.

Is a boat bill of sale notarized?

Some states require notarization for boat title transfer, while others accept a signed bill of sale. Confirm with your state's boat registration office.

Does the boat bill of sale cover the trailer?

Only if the trailer is listed in the document. Trailers are titled separately in many states, so describe the trailer and its own title details if it is part of the sale.
