Frequently Asked Questions
Can a gym member cancel a monthly membership anytime?
Under most month-to-month terms, yes — with written notice, often 30 days. Fixed-term or annual memberships are usually non-refundable unless state law requires otherwise.
What is a gym membership freeze?
A pause on access and billing, typically for a set number of days per year, for reasons like medical leave or travel. The agreement should state the limit and notice required.
Do gyms need to disclose auto-renewal?
Yes — most states require clear disclosure of auto-renewal, the renewal date, and how to cancel. Hidden auto-renewals can violate consumer protection laws.
Can a gym require a liability waiver?
Yes, members typically waive claims for ordinary negligence. Waivers do not cover gross negligence, and some states limit their enforceability, so the waiver language must be clear.
